The New Perspective to Leadership Begins with Holy Conversation
In the previous blog, we introduced this series on the next generation of work for the Committee on Nominations and Leadership Development. The first shift identified is understanding that leadership development starts with the nomination process. The next shift is to understand the work of nominations is discernment, prayer, and holy conversations. Their work is in communion and conversation with potential leaders.
In the past, the work of nominations was most focused on lifting up names and convincing people to say yes to serving. This approach frames the situation as the disciple doing the church a favor by serving. Refocusing instead on leadership development, aligning giftedness, and discipleship maturity helps begin the needed shift.
Ask potential leaders to fill out an interest form (see R-6, page 246-7in Mission Possible 3 for an example) to identify why they feel they are being called into leadership in this season, their spiritual practices, their leadership and spiritual gifts, their hopes for the future of the church, etc. These questions assist potential leaders to begin to see church leadership in a different light.
The nominations committee discerns the leadership needed and the potential leaders they would like to consider for the openings. The committee members then call these potential leaders in for holy conversations and prayer (see R-7, page 248-9 in Mission Possible 3 for example questions). Since this is a new approach, I find it helpful for committee members to practice these holy conversations with one another before having them with potential leaders.
After the holy conversations with potential leaders, the nominations committee prays and discerns together which leaders have the giftedness, commitment, and passion for leading the church in this season. Only then are leaders invited to be nominated for a leadership position.
Over a billion people volunteer in the world each year. According to Michael Walter, they do so because they want to do good, find belonging, find their purpose, and gain energy for life.
